The Aspetuck Land Trust is announcing a series of Short Walks for Short People this spring and summer in Weston, Westport, Easton and Bridgeport/Fairfield. The program of guided hikes offers fun activities and education for children ages 4 to 10 and their parents in exciting natural environments.

Each hike features an expert guide to help children learn a particular aspect of that unique environment.

For example, at the Natural Playground in Westport, children will make art with natural materials, learn about letterboxing and make music with recycled materials.

At Weston’s Stonebridge Preserve, children will sample the Saugatuck River for plankton using magnifying glasses, walk through open meadows with wildflowers, and sing river-themed songs with recycled instruments.

In Fairfield, they will take a boat ride to the Great Salt Marsh and learn about who lives in the tidal marsh and visit an Osprey nest platform.

“We’ve designed this program to give families a great outdoor experience and encourage them to want to do more together outside, either on other open space properties or in their own backyard,” said ALT Executive Director, David Brant. “The hikes will build their comfort level in being outside and playing and exploring together. It also demonstrates the importance of open space.”
