Fairfield Boys Ski Team Wins State Championship

The Fairfield girls finished second behind Staples in the state championship after a 14-0 regular season; the boys were 17-1

The Fairfield boys coop ski team edged Fairfield Prep to win the Connecticut state open championship at Mt. Southington.

Fairfield, which finished the season with a 17-1 record, posted a winning time of 294.52 to edge the Jesuits (302.12) and Wilton (304.64) for the top spot.

Other high schools competing for the state title included New Canaan, Ridgefield, Glastonbury, Weston, Cheshire, Greenwich and Staples.

Fairfield's Kyle Mason finished first and took home the gold medal with a time of 47.02 seconds. Right behind him was teammate Jack Cusick (47.72), who finished second, and Ben Hawthorne (48.26), who placed fifth.

Other strong performances by Fairfield's varsity team included Andrew Kirkpatrick, Hamish Dewar, Bob Mitchell, Jack Zierolf, Davey Hawthorne, Matt Chan and Ryan Solari.  The two Fairfield alternates were Cooper Wicke and Jack Bambach.

The Fairfield girls coop ski team, which finished the regular season with a 14-0 record,  placed second behind Staples in the sate open championship.

In addition to Fairfield and Staples, the girls competition featured the top nine schools in the state: Barlow, Berlin, Darien, Greenwich, Ridgefield, Weston and Wilton.

The girls' time of 318.18 was less than four seconds behind Staples' winning mark of 318.25.

Fairfield freshman Sarah Mason finished with a combined time of 50.80 seconds while Kelsey Tague (51.52) placed 10th and Sydney Burton (51.88) came in 12th.

Other notable contributors to the success of the varsity team include Danielle Fisher, Flossie Dewar, Ana Wycoff, Megan O’Hare, Eliza Wiant, Lydia Brown and Angie Walker.  The two alternates were MacKenzie Hiltz and Caroline Lambert.

Fairfield received the first-place trophy and medals from the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League for its top regular- season performance.
