A Fairfield man was charged on Friday with two counts of risk of injury to a minor after he was accused of sexually abusing his two children, police said.

The 48-year-old Kings Highway East resident turned himself into police on an outstanding warrant, according to the report. His name is being withheld to protect the children’s identity.

The investigation into the allegation of child abuse began in January, when the Department of Children and Families reported the case to police. After separate interviews with the children and their father, sufficient evidence to establish probable cause was determined, and a warrant for the man was issued, according to the report.

Investigators believe the abuse took place about a month prior to when it was reported in January, department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier said. The children do not live with the suspect and had been visiting at the time of the alleged abuse.
