At the CIAC Open indoor track and field championship meet in New Haven on Saturday, Fairfield Warde's senior distance runner Harry Warnick took third place in the 1,600 (4:20.79) and second in the 3,200 (9:31.54) with season-best performances in both events.

He will represent Fairfield Warde at the New England championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on March 2. On the strength of Warnick's two medals, the Mustangs boys team finished tied for seventh in the meet, which was won by Staples.

For the Warde girls, Cate Allen placed 11th in the 1,000 (3:06.24) and 10th in the 1,600 (5:21.54).  Freshman sprinter Lia Joham also ran an impressive 42.80 to place 11th in the 300.

Fairfield Ludlowe's senior sprinter Sydney Kay placed ninth in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.54.  Senior Andrew Fernandes also was ninth in the 600 in 1:25.54.

Fairfield Prep senior Patrick Corona placed fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:33.23), also earning a trip to the New Englands and qualifying for the New Balance Indoor Nationals meet.

The Fairfield boys hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit Saturday to defeat Greenwich 4-2 and stay in the mix for the FCIAC tier one playoffs.

J.P. Raftery's power-play goal and Brett Backman's 5-on-3 goal gave the Cardinals (3-16) a 2-0 lead.

But the Mustangs halved the deficit on Mathieu Larouche's power-play goal with 34 seconds left in the second period. Fairfield then scored three unanswered goals in the third period.

Dan Silvestri tied it with just under 10 minutes remaining before Tom Kryspin scored another power-play goal with just under three minutes left to break the tie. Conor Claflin provided an insurance goal in the final minute when Greenwich was trying to get an extra skater on the ice.

The win left Fairfield  (9-9, 7-4) in a three-way tie for fifth in the FCIAC standings with Trinity Catholic and New Canaan with one game remaining. The top six teams qualify for the tier one playoffs under the FCIAC's new postseason format.

Fairfield concludes the regular season with a tough game at Darien on Wednesday. New Canaan hosts Wilton on Monday and Trinity Catholic entertains Westhill on Wednesday.

Fairfield has a tiebreaker edge over New Canaan but lost to Trinity Catholic.

With eight teams, including Fairfield Warde and Fairfield Ludlowe, battling for the final three playoff spots, the final week of the FCIAC boys basketball season figures to be a wild one with numerous tiebreaker scenarios involved.

Bridgeport Central, Greenwich and Stamford are tied for sixth at 9-7 while Warde (10-8, 8-8) and Ludlowe 8-10, 8-8) are in a five-way tie for ninth with Danbury, Staples and Trumbull.

On Monday, Warde hosts Greenwich and Ludlowe plays at Trumbull in what are essentially elimination contests.

Saddled with a 3-10 record at one point, Ludlowe seemingly has come of nowhere, reeling off five straight wins to stay in the playoff race. If the Falcons beat Trumbull, they are clearly in the driver's seat as they close the regular season at Darien on Wednesday.

Warde has a tougher schedule. After Greenwich, the Mustangs get top-ranked and undefeated St. Joseph on Wednesday. The Mustangs suffered a potentially damaging 45-39 loss to Stamford last Wednesday.

The Mustangs win a tiebreaker against Bridgeport Central. Regarding the other 8-8 teams, they lost to Danbury and  Ludlowe but beat Staples and Trumbull.

Ludlowe loses tiebreakers to all three 9-7 teams, so the Falcons would have to finish ahead of one of them. The Falcons' best bet is for Greenwich to lose to Warde (since Ludlowe has the tiebreaker over its rival) and Danbury.

Regarding the 8-8 teams, Ludlowe also beat Danbury and Staples, so it would win tiebreakers againt the Hatters and Wreckers.

Here are the final schedules for the other contenders:

Greenwich ---at Fairfield Warde, at Danbury

Bridgeport Central -- Trinity Catholic, at McMahon

Stamford -- at Bassick, at Harding

Danbury -- Norwalk, Greenwich

Trumbull -- Fairfield Ludlowe, Trinity Catholic.

Staples -- at McMahon, at Bassick

St. Joseph, Ridgefield, Trinity Catholic, Bassick and Westhill have clinched playoff spots.

Ethan Holdaway had  a hat trick and Ryan Walker added a pair for Glastonbury, which improved to 14-3. Notre Dame dropped to 8-10.

Scott Kline (22) and Justin Krotchko (4) combined to make 26 saves for the Lancers while Chase Gabor stopped 33 shots for the Tomahawks.
