Man Arrested for Firing Rifle in Rap-Rage Incident

No One Injured, Police Say

A 42-year-old Fairfield man was arrested Tuesday night on charges he fired a .22 long rifle toward two men because he was upset about loud rap music and loud mufflers, police said.

Officers who responded to the reported gunfire on Beaconview Drive by Park Square in Fairfield went to the Beaconview Drive home of Richard Morawski and seized additional weapons in his house that included a .357 magnum and 4.5 magnum, police said.

The two men Morawski fired at initially thought he had fired a B.B. gun at them, but officers didn't recover a B.B. gun or find any evidence that a B.B. gun had been used, police said. Police said Morawski had fired a .22 long rifle four times in the direction of the men, police said.

Morawski was taken into custody without incident about 7 p.m. and was charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and breach of peace. He was held in lieu of $100,000 bond and was taken to Bridgeport Superior Court Wednesday morning, police said.

Police said Morawski drove by the two men, got into an argument with them and then went to his house. He then returned through woods and fired the .22 long rifle in the direction of the men, who remained in the park and called police, police said.

"He was upset at kids in the area who drive around with loud mufflers and playing rap music," Police Sgt. Sue Lussier, a department spokesman, said of Morawski's motivation in firing at the men.

It wasn't immediately clear if Morawski lawfully possessed the weapons found and seized by police.
