McCoy's Pub: Transplanting Ireland in Stratford

The story of Stratford's McCoy's Pub starts about 3,000 miles away.

The story of Stratford's McCoy's Pub as most people know it today can be traced back to Dingle, Ireland. The coastal town is where, some four years ago, newlyweds Glenn Zuklie and his wife stopped off during a two-week-long honeymoon in the Emerald Isle. "The beauty of Ireland really struck me," said Zuklie, adding that locals in Dingle still speak Gaelic. "Everyone over there was very accommodating." At some point, locals directed Zuklie and his wife to a nearby pub. After being handed a pint of Guinness, Zuklie said there was a moment while he was enjoying his drink and looking outside at the "pebbles in the road with blades coming through" when he was struck with the desire to open his own pub. The pub's communal atmosphere was equally …

Readers' Choice: Favorite Yoga Studio

Where's your favorite place to Fairfield to practice the ancient art of yoga?

While Zumba, P90X, boxilates (whatever that is) and other fitness trends seem to come and go (anybody remember Tae Bo?), yoga remains popular throughout the world. Not only is it known for toning and strengthening the body, but yoga is also touted for increasing flexibility, reducing stress, and promoting overall health and wellness. With a variety of yoga studios to choose from, as well as styles of practice, the choice of where to downward dog, practice the tree pose or attempt a headstand can be a tricky one. So, for this week’s Readers’ Choice contest, we are asking for your favorite yoga studio in Fairfield. Casting a vote in our poll below is fine -- leaving a review in our directory for why you love your yoga studio is better. If …

Restaurant Road Trip

Darien Pizza Joint Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Take advantage of 1970s prices on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Post Corner Pizza, and maybe you'll be one of the 40 winners who will get to buy a large pizza every week for 40 weeks -- all in celebration of the business's 40th anniversary.

A fluffy, thicker crust than most pizzas in this area. And yet that crust has a harder surface. Then there's the checkerboard way of cutting up the slices. For 40 years (actually closer to 41) Post Corner Pizza in Darien has always had its own distinctive way of cooking up and serving pizza pies. That's one of the reasons loyal fans have mobbed the 130-seat restaurant at the corner of the Post Road and Mansfield Avenue on weekend nights for generations. Greek salads and other dishes have also been stable staples of the establishment, founded in 1971 by John Sofronas, who operated it with his wife, Kathy, until they sold the business five years ago to its current owner, Peter Kousidis. "He [Sofronas] was pretty particular as to who he was …
