Richard Weiland is running to get the GOP nomination to challenge Congressman Jim Himes (D-4th) this November.
A veteran of the Air Force who’s lived in Redding for over 35 years is seeking to unseat Congressman Jim Himes (D-4th) this fall. But he’s first got to grab the Republican nomination. Dick Wieland—a self-proclaimed “retired businessman, but not a retired citizen”— said he’s got administrative experience necessary to enact change in Washington. “I have a military, professional, business and citizen [experience] that has demonstrated sound judgment, [as well as] good decision-making aspects in all these fields,” Wieland told Patch. “I have a demonstrated ability to outline a plan, articulate the details and achieve supporter buy-in—otherwise known as leadership. I have the wherewithal and energy to confront Washington and make a change.” …

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney also won in the four other state primaries held Tuesday.
Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney swept Tuesday’s primaries in five states, including Connecticut, according to an Associated Press report in the Connecticut Post. Romney seized the majority of the vote in Fairfield, where voter turnout was low. Just 11.7 percent of the town’s nearly 10,500 registered Republican voters exercised their right to vote on Tuesday, according to the Fairfield Registrar’s office. Perhaps that’s because, as Republican Town Committee Char Jamie Millington told Patch on Monday, the Connecticut primary comes late in the game; the race for the nomination is barely a contest by late April. Of the 1,224 votes cast, Romney snagged 919 of them, or 75 percent. Texas congressman Ron Paul came in second with 127 …

Fairfield residents who have registered with the Republican Party have a chance to weigh in on who will represent the GOP in the 2012 Presidential Election.
Fairfield Republicans have a chance to weigh in on who will contest President Barack Obama come November 2012 today in Connecticut’s GOP Primary. While it seems clear that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will snag the party’s nominations, it’s still important for residents to go out and vote, Fairfield Republican Town Committee Chairman Jamie Millington said. “It would be better if we moved the primary up. We’d have more say as to who the candidate will be,” Millington said. “Nonetheless it’s something we need to move forward with.” Millington encouraged his fellow party members to take the opportunity to vote; he and his wife will be out doing the same. He expects the turnout to be light Tuesday due to the no-contest nature of …

Republicans will go to the polls tomorrow to vote for their presidential candidate to face Barack Obama in November. But with Rick Santorum suspending his campaign (he's still on the ballot), and Newt Gringrich and Ron Paul considered long-shots, at best, Mitt Romney is now the "de facto" nominee for president for the GOP — thus turnout at the polls is expected to be low. Voters in the Fourth Congressional District are more interested in the outcome of the tight race between Republican candidates Chris Meek and Steve Obsitnik, who are both vying to become the Party's choice to run against Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat who has held the House seat for the past two terms. Both men say they are the Party's best shot at defeating Himes, as they …

Kevin Coyner is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for the Connecticut General Assembly's 132nd district.
Kevin Coyner, who announced in late March his candidacy for State Representative, may not have lived in Fairfield for very long, but he intends to retire here. “I haven’t been here for 20 years, but I want to be here for the next 20 years,” Coyner told Patch in a recent interview. That’s why he decided to launch a bid to run against incumbent State Rep. Brenda Kupchick for the 132nd General Assembly District. (Fellow Democrat Sue Brand announced her candidacy for the seat on Monday). Coyner wants to make Fairfield the place to live as a small child through retirement. “Fairfield is a great place to live… but it’s becoming increasingly harder,” he said. “I’m seeing a lot of people forced out, forced out of the state. That shouldn’t be the …

The Democratic Party of Wisconsin said Tuesday it has filed a election bribery complaint with state election officials and the district attorney after GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan handed out free Cousins Subs.
[Editor's Note: This article was originally published on Shorewood, WI Patch.] The Democratic Party of Wisconsin is alleging that Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan committed election bribery by offering "subs for votes” in Waukesha on Tuesday. Party Chairman Mike Tate said at a press conference that Democrats have filed a complaint with the Government Accountability Board, the state agency that oversees elections in Wisconsin, and with the Waukesha County District Attorney's office. Video captured by Patch shows Romney and Ryan handing out the sub sandwiches. Additionally, a video edited by the state Democratic Party shows Romney leading a rally and telling supporters to go vote, and “If you want …

Political analyst and campaign consultant Dick Morris, who has a home in Redding, has endorsed Chris Shays in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
Dick Morris, a nationally known political commentator and consultant with a home in Redding, endorsed Chris Shays today in the GOP primary for U.S. Senate and rejected Linda McMahon, saying she can't win. In a video posted to Shays' campaign website, Morris says, "I'm supporting Christopher Shays for United States Senate. He was a congressman for Fairfield County and he’s a tremendous guy. I've known him for more than a decade. A strong, staunch fiscal conservative, he served on the budget committee in the House and worked on forcing a balanced budget." Morris said Linda McMahon has proven she can't win a general election in Connecticut by losing to Dick Blumenthal in the 2010 election for U.S. Senate. "Anybody could have beaten …

The legislation would allow residents to register on Election Day and on the Internet, according to the Connecticut Mirror.
Gov. Dannel Malloy and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced on Monday a call for legislation that would make it easier for Connecticut residents to register to vote and submit absentee ballots, according to the Connecticut Mirror. The proposed legislation would allow voter registration on Election Day, online voter registration and increased penalties for those found guilty of blocking or impeding voter access. “In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we have a tremendous opportunity this year to expand access to the ballot box to the many citizens of our state who face barriers to voting because their busy working lives make it difficult to register or appear at their polling place on Election Day," Merrill said in a …

Himes definitely is a Pelosi/Reid "Tax, borrow and SPEND guy and needs to be replaced! Last Saturday in Fairfield he tried to convince citizens that he is serious about our nation's Fiscal--Debt and Spending--Crisis. He wants us to believe he is some kind of "moderate," so people will vote to re-elect him. His charade did not work, as people who have been paying attention know that Himes has …   more ›
