First Selectman Mike Tetreau has appointed Helen D'Avanzo to serve as Fairfield's Town Treasurer, replacing former Town Treasurer Sheryl Shaughnessey. The Treasurer’s term lasts four years and ends in November of 2015. The primary duty of the Town Treasurer is to serve as a member of the bond committee along with the Board of Selectmen and Fiscal Officer who are responsible for executing and analyzing all borrowings for the Town.
First Selectman Tetreau said, "Mrs. D'Avanzo brings a wealth of financial and community knowledge to this important role. In these difficult economic times, we are fortunate to have such a high caliber individual serve our Town."
Mrs. D'Avanzo has had a long time record of service in Fairfield. Community activities include completing an unexpired term on the Board of Finance; serving as the former RTM Finance Committee Chair and Representative in RTM district eight; serving as a board member on Operation Hope and Friends of Fairfield Library; serving as a local coordinator for the TaxAide Program at the Fairfield Senior Center; and serving as a member of the League of Women Voters. In 2006, Mrs. D'Avanzo received the Eunice Postol Community Service Award from the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee.
In addition, Mrs. D'Avanzo's professional experience includes serving as: a project manager at Market Date Retrieval; a long term consultant in marking analysis at Reader’s Digest Young Families; a senior auditor at Defense Contract Audit Agency; and an administrative officer and senior tax auditor at the IRS.
Mrs. D’Avanzo has a B.A. in Political Science from Molloy College; a M.S. in Taxation from the University of New Haven and received her accounting concentration from the University of Maine.
