National Theatre Live in HD Presents Tony Award Winner 'FELA!' at Quick Center

"There should be dancing in the streets. There has never been anything like this."
Ben Brantley, The New York Times

The National Theatre Live in HD presents the Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical "FELA!" at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Fairfield University's . There will be an encore performance at 2 Saturday, Jan. 15. Tickets are $22 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $15 for children and students.  There is reserved seating.  This Arts & Minds presentation is part of the University focus of Global Citizenship.

A provocative and wholly unique hybrid of dance, theater and music, "FELA!" explores the world of Afro-beat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Using his pioneering music — a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies — "FELA!" reveals Kuti's controversial life as an artist and political activist.  It features many of Kuti's most captivating songs and Bill T. Jones' visionary staging, for which he won a 2010 Tony® Award for Best Choreography; one of three Tony's won by the show.

"FELA!" has received acclaim wherever it has played. Time Out, New York called it "An ecstatic phenomenon," and Entertainment Weekly said it "Radiates joy."  The Los Angeles Times dubbed it one of the "Top 10 Shows of 2009.  It's a work of total theatre and a party where the power of the people is unleashed with a contagious jiggle."

The National Theatre's London production is produced in association with Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Ruth & Stephen Hendel, Roy Gabay, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Edward Tyler Nahem, Slava Smolokowski, Chip Meyrelles/Ken Greiner, Douglas G. Smith, Steve Semlitz/Cathy Glazer, Daryl Roth/True Love Productions, Susan Dietz/Mort Swinsky, Knitting Factory Entertainment and with Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson.
