Democrats Offer New Redistricting Plan

The following press release has been submitted by the Democratic Members of the RTM Redistricting Committee May 7, 2013, Fairfield, CT. In the spirit of collegiality and to resolve the current impasse, the Democratic members of the RTM Redistricting Committee are proposing a plan with 10 districts of 4 members per district, which, if approved, could be in place by the State redistricting deadline of June 1. The committee has been at a stalemate, with Republicans wanting a reduction in the number of districts to reduce the size of the RTM, and Democrats wanting to maintain 10 districts to ensure proportionate representation. This plan would achieve the reduction Republicans seek in the size of the RTM, from 50 to 40 members (a 20% reduction), while still maintaining the fair and proportionate representation Democrats believe is vital to the legislative body. It gives each party their primary goal. Democrats believe Fairfield's 10 districts can easily be redrawn to comply with the State and Town mandates and maintain the almost equal balance of Democratic and Republican voters in Fairfield. We would rather not reduce the number of representatives serving our community. However in order to break the deadlock, we are reaching out to our colleagues with this plan.
