"Genetics and Breast Cancer Talk in Southport Nov. 7

The role that genetics plays in breast cancer will be addressed in a talk at The CT Challenge Center for Survivorship, 250 Pequot Ave., Southport, on Thurs., Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The Breast Cancer Survival Center (BCSC) will host the talk.

In her talk, “Genetics and Breast Cancer,” Jessica Lipshutz, genetic counselor at Norwalk Hospital’s Whittingham Cancer Center, will discuss hereditary breast cancer syndrome: Who is at risk?; What testing is available?; and What are the strategies to reduce the risk of cancer? Lipshutz will offer an up-to-date view of genetic testing, including parameters for test recommendation, and what people can do when they have a gene or gene profile. Her talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

BCSC’s Clinical Director Nina Marino of Norwalk says issues about genetic testing is a frequent topic at the survival center’s support group meetings. “Sometimes, there is confusion about who should be tested. Also, questions arise about family history.  For example, while generations of family members have had cancer, there seems to be no identifiable gene when they get tested.”

Marino added that actress Angelina Jolie has heightened awareness about the risk of breast cancer and its hereditary link.   Earlier this year, Jolie went public with her pro-active decision to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction to reduce the risk of breast cancer because she carries the gene BRCA1, which increases her risk. Jolie’s mother died of ovarian cancer at age 56 in 2007.

The meeting will include a light supper.  For reservations contact Marino at Cancersurvival2@aol.com or 203-857-7304. For additional information visit the BCSC web site at www.breastcancersurvival.org.
