ITN’s services have given more than 1,000 rides to seniors in Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Fairfield and Easton, CT since its inception.  The organization works by training and insuring volunteers (who have had background and DMV checks first) willing to drive seniors 24/7 to, from, and within the above towns.

The group calls it “arm-through-arm, door to door dignified transportation.”  The rates are affordable with a $3.50 pick up fee and $1.50 per mile fee.  However, no money is exchanged in the vehicle and tips are not accepted.  People wishing to use the service establish an account with ITN ahead of time.  Then when they use the service, the charge is subtracted from their account.  Monthly statements are issued and people are encouraged to keep a balance in the account to cover the rides they foresee taking each month.

Riders are picked up by volunteer drivers who help them into the car, and help them into their destination.  One way rides are possible and it is also possible for drivers to wait for the rider for a short time.

Terry Giegengack, Director of Human and Social Services, said: “ITN is a wonderful alternative to the transportation offered by the Senior Center, because they cover a wider territory than our buses are allowed to go and rides are available 24/7.  This service allows seniors who also don’t like to drive at night, but wish to meet friends for dinner or a movie, a safe and dignified option.”  Rides are often given to visit people in hospitals or nursing homes, or to medical appointments out of town.

Another good feature is that if a family member wishes to volunteer to be a driver, they can “earn points” which can then be used by a member of their family, for future rides.

Please call to reserve a space for this interesting presentation which is free of charge at 203-256-3166 Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. If the Senior Center bus is necessary, feel free to call 203-256-3168 a few days in advance to book a ride.  The Center is handicapped accessible.  Free parking is available.
