HCC Presents Urban Bush Women

Bridgeport -- …Dance for Every Body, a movement jam/dance workshop led by Brooklyn-based Urban Bush Women and sponsored by the Housatonic Museum of Art, Bridgeport, CT, will be held Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the Housatonic Community College Events Center in Beacon Hall from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.   Space is limited and registration for this free event is recommended.  Call (203) 332-5052.

Dance for Every Body embraces the ideas that each individual has a unique and powerful contribution to make, and that our bodies are a powerful source of agency. The goal is for "every body" to find their level of challenge and comfort, to partake according to their abilities, and to appreciate the groups’ diversity as an attribute to their community. This is a movement class designed for the community so no prior dance experience is needed. Participants explore UBW's technique with close attention to the use of breath, weight, call and response and polyrhythm.

Founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women (UBW) seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light through dance.  This is presented from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community the group seeks to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond.   UBW uses art as a means of addressing issues of social justice and encouraging civic engagement and aspires to ensure continuity by strengthening and expanding their international community via ongoing professional education, development of new audiences, nurturing young talent and presenting bold, life-affirming dance works in a variety of settings including at their annual Summer Leadership Institute.
