Connecticut Challenge Raises Money For Cancer Survivors

Money raised is approaching $1 million for this year's Challenge, which took place in Fairfield on Saturday

More than 700 cyclists participated Saturday in the sixth annual Connecticut Challenge, a fundraiser in Fairfield that helps raise money for cancer survivors.

The age of the riders ranged from eight years old to 80, and the final tally was 735, an increase of 45 percent from last year.  According to race officials,  the amount of money raised so far this year is approaching $1 million.

Participants, one of whom came from as far as Florida,  made pledges based on the number of miles they rode.  The were five different routes - 12, 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles.

The race started and ended at the Greenfield Hill Congressional Church.

The Connecticut Challenge was co-founded by John Ragland and Jeff Kieth - Keith is a pediatric cancer survivor - and helps support hospitals around the state to create cancer survivorship programs.

The goal is to have all 30 Connecticut hospitals develop cancer  survivorship programs.
