Fairfield Considers Streetscape Upgrades Near Metro Center

Town officials are considering a $1.2 million project to enhance pedestrian and streetscape enhancements near the Fairfield Metro Center. They'll hold an informational meeting about the project on Thursday, June 27.

Fairfield officials are considering pedestrian and streetscape enhancements near the Fairfield Metro train station and seek to gauge public interest for the project.

The town will host a public information meeting on Thursday, June 27, regarding a proposed project to provide pedestrian, bicycle, and streetscape enhancements in the Kings Highway and Commerce Drive neighborhoods near the rail station.

The purpose of the meeting is to gauge community interest and support for the proposed project. The project consists primarily of pedestrian streetscape and ADA improvements to replace deteriorated sections of sidewalk, installing decorative sidewalks and other amenities, improving the existing center median, and installing new pedestrian signal improvements to enhance connections to the new commuter rail station.

The federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) is expected to fund the project, which is expected to cost $1.2 million. The agency requires a 20 percent local match for both design and construction phases.

If support for the project appears sufficient at the June 27 meeting, the town will have to initiate and commit funding for the project and complete the design phase. Construction would not begin until spring 2015 at the earliest.
