Fairfield Named 'Top Municipal Energy Efficiency Leader'

Ed Boman, Fairfield's energy manager and assistant director of Public Works, has worked for years to make Fairfield a greener town. His efforts were recognized earlier this month at Connecticut's first annual Power of Change awards, where Fairfield was named a Top Municipal Energy Efficiency Leader.

The town was recognized by state and energy leaders, including Gov. Dannel Malloy, Commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Daniel Etsy, Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation President Stewart Hudson, and others.

The Power of Change awards aim to reinforce Malloy's "Lead by Example" program, which calls for the win-win benefits of energy efficiency for Connecticut and its taxpayers, according to a Power of Change release.

The Power of Change award winners (10 municipalities in all) "demonstrate Connecticut's leadership and innovation in energy efficiency," Hudson said. " They are prime examples of how our municipalities are taking an active role in advancing a clean energy economy."

Fairfield received top honors for "setting clear metrics and adhering to its detailed and comprehensive plan to achieve many important energy and environmental goals over a period of time," according to the release.

Those goals include substantial reductions in energy consumption; switching to clean energy sources; reductions in pollution, nitrogen, and greenhouse gas emissions; and integrating a combination of proven and innovative energy-saving technologies.

"We strive to be a model on energy efficiency that not only helps our environment, but reduces costs," First Selectman Michael Tetreau said.

Tetreau added that he was "especially grateful" to Boman for "helping our town receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings over the years by reducing energy consumption."
