Fairfield PAL Casts for Young Anglers for Snapper Blue Derby

Got a youngster aged 3-15 who loves fishing? Enter them in the Fairfield Police Athletic League's annual Snapper Blue Derby on Aug. 25 at South Benson Marina.

Fairfield's Police Athletic League is gearing up for its annual Snapper Blue Derby, where young anglers compete to see who can land the first snapper blue and the largest fish overall.

The free event is scheduled for Aug. 25 at the South Benson Marina, 555 Turney Road in Fairfield, and will run from noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. on the 25th.

Girls and boys aged 3 to 15 are eligible to participate, but they must bring their own fishing pole. Jimmy O's Bait & Tackle, located at 3389 Fairfield Ave. in Bridgeport, is sponsoring the event and will provide a small amount of bait to each entrant.

In addition to prizes for the first snapper blue and the largest fish, prizes will also be awarded for the first catch of the day and the smallest fish, among others.

The annual event has attracted hundreds of local kids in past years, and is similar to the Trout Derby the Fairfield PAL holds in April at Gould Manor Pond.
