Snowstorm Brings Southwestern Connecticut to a Standstill [Updated]

Update as of 12:02 p.m. on Feb. 5:

As Metro-North deals with significant weather-related problems on its overhead catenary, the New Have Line will operate on an hourly schedule starting at noon today. According to Metro-North:

Hourly service will begin with the following trains:

• Inbound to NYC (46 minutes after the hour from New Haven; on the hour from Stamford
• The 11:46 AM from New Haven making all stops to Stamford, then operating express to Harlem-125th St Station and Grand Central Terminal
• The 12:00 PM from Stamford making all stops to Grand Central Terminal
• Outbound from NYC (8 minutes after the hour to New Haven; 34 minutes after the hour to Stamford)
• The 12:08 PM from Grand Central Terminal operating express to Stamford and then making all stops to New Haven
• The 12:34 PM from Grand Central Terminal making all stops to Stamford.

Metro-North also asked that riders continue to listen to announcements at your station and on board trains for any service changes. Also, Metro-North said, customers should use caution when entering and exiting trains, and on platforms and staircases.

Update as of 10:10 a.m. on Feb. 5:

About half of the flights going out of and coming into Bradley International Airport have been cancelled for the day, an airport spokesman told the Hartford Courant.

The Westchester County Airport is open, and currently experiencing delays of about 15 minutes. You can check your flight here.

From Metro-North: "New Haven Line Customers should anticipate system-wide delays of 45-60 minutes due to power problems caused by severe weather conditions."

A winter storm is crippling southwestern Connecticut this morning.

As heavy snow continues to accumulate throughout the region, the impacts are being felt on the roads and the rails.

Metro-North announced at 7:40 a.m. Feb. 5 that New Haven Line customers should anticipate system-wide delays of up to 30 minutes due to power problems caused by severe weather conditions. In a subsequent message 15 minutes later, Metro-North stated:  

"New Haven Line Westbound trains will not stop between Old Greenwich and Cos Cob. Customers should travel eastbound to Stamford where they can transfer for westbound service to access those stations. This is due to severe weather conditions. Please listen for announcements at your station."

As for the roads, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has asked people to stay off them — much like many municipal leaders and police and fire departments have advised.

Malloy has also issued a soft ban on tandem trailers on Connecticut highways, in cooperation w/ our neighboring states.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo took it a step further and has closed Interstate 84 to all vehicles. Anyone on the highway there is subject to a ticket.

Given the weight of the snow and the expected turnover to ice — the area could see as much as a quarter inch when all is said and done — power outages are a possibility. Malloy said the state is monitoring that, and as of about 8 a.m., he reported that they were minimal.
