Film Series at Fairfield Public Library

The Fairfield Plays Hollywood film series at the Fairfield Public Library will begin Sunday, October 2.  This fall the series will be focusing on “Movies that Changed Film.”  The films will be shown at 2 p.m. on the following Sundays:  October 2, October 9, October 23, October 30, November 6 and November 13 in the Rotary Room of the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.

Hundreds of thousands of movies have been produced since the late 1890’s.   Relatively few films can be considered truly groundbreaking.  This film series at the Library will explore six cinema masterpieces that cinephile Laurence Lowy believes are cornerstones of film history.  Each film will be introduced with information to help understand its power and inspiration, with an audience discussion following.  The films that will be shown are:

October 2            Citizen Kane (1941)
October 9            My Darling Clementine (1946)
October 23          On the Waterfront (1954)
October 30          Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
November 6       The Graduate(1967)
November 13    M*A*S*H (1970)

This series is hosted by Laurence Lowy.  Laurence Lowy is a retired podiatrist, as well as the Dean for Student Services and full-time Professor at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. His passion has always been the movies.  From November 2001 to January 2007, he spearheaded a Film Forum at the Bethel Cinema wherein he introduced current films, offering insights to enhance the moviegoer experience.  Also at Bethel, he developed a Film Classics Class where he presented classic and “neo-classic” films and discussed their attributes and places in cinema history. From 2004 - 2007 he was the film reviewer for Minuteman Newspapers and wrote several articles on film events occurring in Fairfield County.
