FTC and CT Post Writer Joe Meyers Host a Monthly Film Series.
"My Favorite Year" (1982) - In this charming comedy, a young writer on a 1950s TV variety show (Mark Linn-Baker) is given the job of chaperoning movie star Alan Swann (Oscar nominee Peter O'Toole) during the week the failing actor prepares for a guest shot. O'Toole chews the scenery playing a character who comes off as a mixture of John Barrymore and Errol Flynn after their heavy drinking had taken its toll. Joseph Bologna is very funny as the Sid Caesar-like star of the variety show and Lainie Kazan has a memorable scene as Linn-Baker's starstruck mother. Director Richard Benjamin shot the whole film on New York City locations made to look as they were 30 years earlier.
