PLPlay With Your Food Celebrates Spring With March Productions

Play With Your Food (PWYF) will celebrate the sighting of spring with the presentation of three touching, yet humorous, plays in both Westport and Fairfield.

“We look forward to many things when the weather finally starts to warm up,” said PWYF Artistic Director Carole Schweid. “For March, we’ve chosen baseball, babies and bubbies!”

The productions -- Happy, No Kids and Crossing Delancey -- will be performed at Toquet Hall in Westport, March 8-10, and at Fairfield Theater Company on Tuesday, March 15. The events begin at noon with a gourmet lunch followed by staged professional readings of short plays by award-winning playwrights. A discussion with the cast members and directors concludes the program.

The Fairfield audience will be treated to a hot buffet lunch of pastas and salads provided by Café Madeline.

Happy is a comedy about family, baseball, disappointment and perseverance. The author, Alan Zweibel, won a Tony Award for his collaboration on Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays on Broadway. He’s written shows for Martin Short and Gilda Radner and was an original writer on Saturday Night Live.

Westport-based actor/writer Rhea Ruggiero will premier her original piece, No Kids, a short play about the deep-seated desire to be part of a group and make a connection. The one-woman reading will feature Ruggiero, who trained for many years with world-famous actress and teacher, Uta Hagen. The director of No Kids is another acclaimed actress and director, Fairfield’s Tony-Award nominated Mia Dillon.

Crossing Delancey, by Susan Sandler, was a hit play before it was a hit movie. It’s the story of a “pickle man;” Izzy, a confused young woman; and her “Bubbie” (grandma) whom, she visits every Sunday on New York’s lower east side. Bubbie wants only the best for her Izzy, and she’ll do just about anything to get it. Andrea Gallo will read during this production.

During a post-event discussion, PWYF will address the magnetic pull of our own personal histories. “There is something in this program about wrapping up the past before you move ahead into the future,” observes Schweid. “But that’s only what we think. What really matters is what the audience thinks, feels, and takes away from their afternoon at Play With Your Food.”

Tickets to the shows are $43 per person and include lunch. Advance registration is required.

The Play With Your Food season concludes next month. Performances in Westport will be held April 5-7, with lunch provided by Bobby Q’s. Fairfield shows will take place April 12, with lunch provided by Garelick & Herbs.

The featured productions during the season finales will be a short musical scene from South Pacific by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan; The Kiss by Mark Harvey Levine and Judgment Call by Frederick Stroppel.
