Life is too short, and I'm Italian. I'd much rather eat pasta and drink wine than be a size 0.
This Thursday I traveled to Gabriele's in Orange, Connecticut (326 Boston Post Road www.gabrielect.com) to sample some true Italian Cuisine. When we arrived we noticed hoards of people entering and leaving the restaurant, so we assumed it had to be fairly good. We also saw the giant portions being brought to the tables around us. After we were seated, we ordered appetizers, which were: a fried slab of crispy mozzarella with warm melted cheese oozing from the sides and smothered in marinara sauce.In addition to that, we ordered New York fried calamari that was not so fried and was a little bit flaccid. The calamari was very fishy tasting and not appetizing.
For my main meal I sampled a hot bowl of soup filled to the brim with delicious tortellini (the tortellini was erupting with juicy meat and cheese).We also sampled warm gnocchi with rich creamy pesto slathered on it. The pesto was different from our usual variety in the sense that it was cream based rather than olive oil based.Finally I tried the smooth, spicy sauce from a clam dish.
For dessert I enjoyed a tall serving of ice cream topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. The ice cream was cool and refreshing and yummy.
The food was good overall except for the disappointing calamari. The atmosphere of Gabrielle's was very dark and sad looking but the wait staff was all smiles. Our waitress was very nice and respectful, while also being very happy and bubbly. In addition the value was very good for the huge portions we obtained! I would possibly go back, but I would not order the calamari. I would rate it ZZZ= 3 Z's= Good!
