Walrus + Carpenter

The time has come," the walrus said, "to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings.

Lewis Carroll

Recently my Dad and I took the short trip up the Post Road in Fairfield to sample the well-regarded food from  Walrus + Carpenter (www.walruscarpenterct.com). After hearing and reading numerous reviews about the restaurant, we were ready to give it a try ourselves. As we hopped out the car we noticed a large outline of a painted pig on the side of the restaurant. After being seated in the packed bar area of the restaurant, we were introduced to our waiter, who brought us a small green bottle of chilled, refreshing water. My dad proceeded to order a glass of small batch bourbon with what he described as, "just the right type of ice cubes". The service was professional, while also being extremely friendly.

When it was our time order, we began constructing the blue prints of our feast. The first meal we ordered originally hails from Canada, but this American spin to the classic dish: Poutine, was delicious. Fries, the backbone of any good meal, served as a base to this glorious plate.

Next was a heavy drizzle of herbal, chestnut brown, warm gravy, and finally a slap of melted cheese curds. This dish was delectable, and was devoured by my father and I.

Next we ordered a small dish containing: two hefty slabs of pork belly, and a drizzle of bourbon syrup.

The pork belly was smoky, juicy, and bursting with flavor and the addition of the syrup was genius.

As you know from previous write-ups, fried chicken is one of my favorite things in the world. I love it so much, that whenever it happens to be on the menu, I always end up ordering it. At  Walrus + Carpenter, this was no exception.

My Dad and I ordered a shared plate, containing four pieces of crisp, crusty on the outside, moist and tender on the inside fried chicken (breast, thigh, drumstick, and wing). On the side was a dry, flakey biscuit with a light sprinkling of salt and pepper, as well as Mac and Cheese and a spicy, thick, sweet honey/Sriracha sauce.

The Mac and Cheese we obtained was steaming hot, and contained an abundance of melted butter, warm cheese, and a crispy bread crumb crust. This was some of the best Mac and Cheese that I had ever had, and was fought over between my Dad and I.

The last dish that we got was Pork Baby Back Ribs. The Ribs were succulent and meaty, while also being very well organized. On the side of this dish, was a moist, cake-like piece of corn bread, and a small pile of homemade, sour, tangy, crunchy pickles.

For dessert my Dad and I were looking to be adventurous, so we set our eyes on the bacon chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was flakey on the outside and contained warm melted chocolate in the middle. In addition to the chocolate, the cookie was also sprinkled with a huge amount of fried bacon bits. The dish was slightly disappointing considering we had such high hopes for it. It was a bit dry and unfortunately, the bacon was a little bland.

The atmosphere of Walrus + Carpenter was very rustic, while also being quite modern and elegant at the same time. The value that the restaurant presented us with, was very reasonable for a nice trip out to dinner and remained well under 100 dollars for the grand eating experience.

I would give it ZZZZ- 4 Z's- Awesome for a night out!
