Traditional Christmas Flowers

Different varieties of Christmas flowers and idea's for what you can do with them.

While many people decorate their homes with Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths, floral decorations are common as well. Christmas flowers can bring natural beauty to both private and public festive celebrations. If you are looking for the perfect Christmas flower to decorate your home or office, need flower ideas for an upcoming formal event, or simply want to send a loved one a Christmas flower arrangement, you'll have many varieties to choose from.

Poinsettia

Poinsettias are one of the most recognizable Christmas flowers. Their flower petals are actually the upper leaves, or bracts, of the poinsettia plant. They are native to Central America and Mexico, where they are called Noche de Buenas. While red poinsettias are the most common types found during the Christmas season, poinsettias also come in shades of white, cream, pink and peach. Many people buy them in potted arrangements, and florists place their bract stems in large floral bouquets and centerpieces. Potted poinsettias are usually inexpensive, and many silk versions are also available.

Amaryllis

Amaryllises are winter bulb flowers that typically bloom during the Christmas season. This makes them a popular Christmas flower and gifts.Their stems can grow up to 30 inches tall, which makes them ideal for both formal centerpieces and bouquets. Amaryllises come in a wide variety of colors, including red, pink and white. They symbolize pride, beauty and determination. These elegant flowers are perfect if you're looking for a gift with meaning or need Christmas flowers to decorate an elegant dinner or event.

Christmas Cactus

The Christmas cactus is another popular holiday plant with flower blooms. This succulent plant features flattened, green leaf-like stems called cladodes, and it doesn't have leaves or spines. The Christmas cactus is native to Brazil and can have a wide variety of bloom colors, including red, orange, purple and cream. It typically blooms near Christmas Eve, which makes it a popular gift during the holiday season. It works well in both potted arrangements and hanging baskets.

Christmas Flower Accents

If you're looking to add a festive Christmas touch to a flower arrangement or bouquet, add stems of bright red Holly berries. Ivy can add a splash of green color to formal centerpieces, while white snowberries are ideal for Christmas wedding boutonnieres. Other Christmas-themed flower accents include red dogwood stems and green eucalyptus berries.

Red Roses and Christmas Berries

Everyone thinks about red roses in connection with Valentine's Day because they symbolize love. However, one of the best winter flowers are red roses. This is when they are the brightest and fullest. A vase full of red roses mixed with some Amaryllises can decorate any table and provide the room with some Christmas spirit. Another attractive addition to a bouquet is accents such as holly berries and green eucalyptus berries.
