One Detained After Attempted TD Bank Robbery

Update, 4 p.m.

Police are looking for a light blue or teal colored four-door Mercedes Benz CLS500 in connection to this incident, according to press release from the department.

It is believed that at least one of the suspects -- described as a Hispanic male, who was reportedly carrying a gun -- left the scene before officers' arrival in the described vehicle.

Two police officers working a private duty construction job nearby were able to apprehend the one suspect arrested on scene and secure the safety of the victim, according to the release.

Police say a man was kidnapped Monday from Bridgeport and brought to TD Bank on Black Rock Turnpike to withdraw cash from a safe deposit.

One suspect was detained at gunpoint on scene and at least two others remain at large, Police Lt. James Perez said, as officers comb Fairfield and Bridgeport for leads.

The Emergency Communications Center received a call from TD Bank (1715 Black Rock Turnpike) at approximately 2 p.m. The victim was taken in to the bank by one of the suspects (the one that was apprehended on scene) to remove cash from a safe deposit box, Perez said.

The victim was "smart enough to notify someone in the bank that this was happening," Perez added.

"This was a great observation and efficient response," Police Chief Gary MacNamara said. "Thankfully, no one was hurt."

Initially there was a report that a suspect with a gun entered TD Bank with the victim, but police have not recovered a gun, MacNamara said.

Officers checked in on a possibly related incident on Moritz Place, which checked OK, Perez said.

Investigators are working with Bridgeport police to piece together the timeline of events and to detain the other suspects.

This is the second kidnapping in as many weeks that ended at a location in Fairfield. On April 12, when two people were kidnapped from Meriden and brought to Lenox Jewelers -- also on Black Rock Turnpike -- and forced to assist suspects in stealing from the store.
