Barn Salon: Hair Haven for Teens & Tweens Opens in Fairfield

Business founded on idea that children and teens should not be charged adult prices for salon services.

Barn Salon owner Stephanie Foote founded her new business on this guiding principle: teens and tweens should not be charged adult rates for haircuts and styles.

"My intention was to create a place that's cute and comfortable for girls ages 8,9 to college age," with moderate pricing that reflects the age of the clients, Foote said.

Moms & boys are welcome, too.

Foote -- a mother of four tweens herself -- had begun cutting hair for both adults and children from her home after years of working as a stylist in Greenwich. The Fairfield resident decided it was time to expand the business from her home into town and found the barn -- located behind Moda Capelli on Lantern Hill, across from the Brick Walk Promenade -- in September.

The barn -- which once housed Moda Capelli in the 80s, Foote said -- was perfect for the tween & teen salon Foote wanted to create outside of her own home.

"I like that it is a freestanding building. Younger kids can play inside while their sister gets her hair done," Foote said. "It's like a cozy home away from home."

Barn Salon officially opened for business in late December. Since opening, Foote has performed the both usual -- trims, color treatments, etc. -- to updos and makeup for the County Assembly Charity Ball in January.

Foote intends to build upon Barn Salon's original mission to incorporate salon parties and become the place in town to get dolled up and ready for prom and other major dances. The two-story barn serves that plan well -- hair styling and makeup stations on the first floor and a second floor space dedicated to changing into dresses and tuxes.

In the month that Barn Salon has been open, Foote has already received positive feedback. One parent told her that it's "really nice that there's a place in town that you can bring a 7-year-old that's nice, but not totally glamorous," Foote said. Rather, Barn Salon is appropriate for the age that seeks a niche the hair business.
