End of the Road for Fairfield Cab Company?

Bruce Northrup, 42, a former cab driver with the taxi company, was sentenced to two years in prison in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on Friday for raping an 18-year-old passenger in May 2010.

Almost coinciding with the sentencing of one of its former drivers to two years in prison for raping an intoxicated female passenger in 2010, the state Department of Transportation has ordered that Fairfield Cab Company be shut down and sold by Feb. 29.

According to a report in the CT Post, Bruce Northrup, 42, a former cab driver with the taxi company, was sentenced to two years in prison in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on Friday for raping a then-18-year-old passenger in May 2010.

Meanwhile another former employee of the cab company is reportedly facing charges of procuring alcohol for minors.

In an unrelated matter, the cab company was recently cited by the state DOT for “numerous violations,” including vehicles that didn’t pass safety inspections.

The report from the DOT, which can be accessed here, states that the cab company’s fleet was in “deplorable condition.”

As long as the current owners, Arthur and Margaret Castellucci, find a buyer for the business by Feb. 29, and all needed paperwork and inspections are completed, the DOT will allow it to continue to operate, according to the CT Post report.

In their report, DOT officials said the cab company was "operating a free-for-all with no oversight."

Officials with Fairfield's Parking Authority reportedly told the CT Post there are a few potential buyers for the company, which has been in operation in Fairfield since 1976.
