Fairfield is the land of plenty when it comes to fitness. From the Edge to Planet Fitness, yoga studios to Zumba places, locals have options for workouts.

So what makes Fit Club stand out?

"Everyone knows each other...everyone knows your name," member Manny said. "It's the type of gym I was looking for -- I wasn't looking for a big gym."

Another member, Susannah, said the gym was family-based.

"Joe [Oppedisano, the owner] treats everyone like family," she said. "He has a little one of his own, so he understands we're spread in all different directions."

Oppedisano opened Fit Club in the Sportsplex@Fairfield on Mill Plain Road in December. Since then, clientele had doubled, Oppedisano said.

"It's awesome. It's been amazing," he said.

Oppedisano believes Fit Club's success can be attributed to two things: location and passion.

"Location is key," he said, and added "We put our hearts into it. Our trainers put their hearts into every class."

Oppedisano's passion for fitness was kindled while he spent years studying, training, and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Fit Club offers Jiu-Jitsu classes (for kids and adults), as well as kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai, and boxing classes.

Clients can also sign up for one-on-one personal training with one of Fit Club's trainers.
