WATCH: Adam's Bakery Shows How Best to Frost a Cake

Patch took a trip to Adam's Bakery on Friday to learn how to frost a round, three-layer cake.

Cake decorator Ela makes it look so easy in the video. She took Patch through the steps (read then watch Ela demonstrate):

1. Cut a bit of the top off the cake to make it flat;

2. Cut your cake(s) in half to create layers;

3. Set the bottom layer down and smooth a layer of buttercream icing on top -- repeat until there are three levels of cake and two layers of buttercream;

4. Plop a liberal amount of icing on top of the cake, spread and smooth;

5. Do the same for the sides of the cake until its completely covered in icing.

For a fancier cake -- like one ordered at Adam's Bakery -- Ela adds an icing border to the top of the cake and around the bottom.

Then, it's up to the customer to decide how to decorate. In the video, Ela went with roses -- one of the more popular requests.

She said the decor depends on the occasion. Girls' birthday cakes often call for flowers; boys' birthdays mean balloons.

Recently, Adam's Bakery took quite a few Communion cake orders, with decorations like Bibles and crosses.

How does Ela make it look so simple? Adan's Bakery own Adam Malinowski said you need the right tools and the icing has to be smooth.

At Adam's, they mix the buttercream twice to ensure that velvety quality.
