Today is Monday, April 30, 2012. On this day in 1997, the character Ellen Morgan (played by Ellen Degeneres) announced on the sitcom “Ellen” that she is gay. This made “Ellen” the first primetime sitcom to feature a gay major character.  

Famous birthdays include Cloris Leachman – 1926; Willie Nelson – 1933; Michael Waltrip – 1963; Kirsten Dunst – 1982.

  • : 6:30 p.m., St. Catherine Academy, 760 Tahmore Drive, free. “Saint Catherine Academy will be hosting a parent workshop focused on targeting the stresses and challenges that parents of children with intellectual disabilities face.”
  • : 5 p.m., , $10. “Join Junior Achievement for an evening of food, friends, and family, as they celebrate financial literacy month at Chip's Family Restaurant! 100% of the evening's proceeds will go to JA and their outstanding efforts to give young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Seatings: 5-6pm, 7-8pm, 8-9pm-no reservations required.”
  • : 6:30 p.m., , free.  “If you are a Civil War and history buff, you don’t want to miss this author.  Matthew Bartlett author of ‘The Gettysburg Chronicle Volume III:  The Bloody Pit’ will be lecturing at the Fairfield Woods Branch Library. The program “From Washington to Lee:  Colonial and Domestic Connections to the Civil War” connects people, places and events to the Civil War that you may not have known about. “
  • 8:30 p.m., , $10. “Join Ingrid Prueher of the Spanish Music and Movement classes for some conversations and drinks/desserts after the kiddies are in bed for some girl talk in Spanish. Ingrid will provide a curriculum of topics for discussion each night with some vocabulary to be familiar with before the class.”
