Former major league baseball player Rico Brogna has been named the new football coach at Notre Dame of Fairfield, the school announced Tuesday.

A former three-sport star at Watertown High School and first-round draft pick of the Detroit Tigers in 1988, Brogna spent 10 seasons in the major leagues with five teams, including the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.

Since retiring in 2001 at the age of 41, Brogna has been involved in coaching and the high school and collegiate level. He also served as a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brogna, who replaces Joe Beler, Jr., officially will be introduced during a press conference at Notre Dame on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

"I am thrilled to be a part of the Notre Dame family," Brogna said. "There is a very strong tradition and history here at Notre Dame and I am excited to help return Notre Dame football to the level of success the school expects it to be. "

In 2o10, Brogna, 41, served as the manager of the Mobile Bay Bears, a Class AA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  He was named the Diamondbacks' director of player personal  in October of 2010 but stepped down a month later.

Brogna's best season in the major leagues came in 1999, when he batted  .278 with 24 homers and 102 RBI for the Phillies.

"I am thrilled to be welcoming Rico Brogna to the Notre Dame family," Notre Dame pricipal Chris Cipriano said.  "Rico understands the importance of success of our student-athletes both in the classroom and on the football field.

"He recognizes the importance of hard work, goal-setting, and academic excellence. Not only will his background as a professional athlete serve to better our team, but more importantly, he will serve as an outstanding role model for our students."

He coached basketball at his alma mater and football at Nonnewaug High School and Wesleyan University.

"His character, coaching skills and leadership is exactly what we are looking for as we build Notre Dame football for the future," Lancers athletic director Rob Bleggi said. "Not only will he be an asset to our football program but to the school as a whole."

Notre Dame is coming off a 2-8 season.

The Fairfield Prep lacrosse team begins its quest for a fifth state championship in six years on Wednesday when the Jesuits host No. 13 seed Southington (11-6) in a CIAC Class L first-round contest at Alumni Field.

Last year, the Jesuits' four-year reign as state champions ended in a 9-8 loss to Cheshire in the Class L title game.

On Saturday, No. 4 seed Prep (15-4) routed Cheshire 11-1 to capture its eighth Southern Connecticut Conference crown since 1996 and third in the last four years.

The winner of Wednesday's contest takes on either No. 5 Glastonbury or No. 12 Greenwich in the quarterfinals on Saturday at the higher seed.

The Jesuits would love another crack at Greenwich, which upset Fairfield Prep 10-4 on May 5.

Since then, Fairfield Prep has won eight of nine, the only loss a 14-3 defeat at St. Anthony's (N.Y) in the regular-season finale.

If form holds, Fairfield Prep would face top seed Newtown, the South-West Conference champion, in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, a semifinal between No. 2 Staples and No. 3 Xavier is looming. Last year, Fairfield Prep posted a one-goal win over Staples in the semifinals.
