Looking to Donate? Newtown Officials Have a List of Funds

While Newtown isn't endorsing any one particular fund, they've put information on the town's web site to help connect potential donors.

Those who'd like to donate to Sandy Hook-related funds -- or have already set up funds and are looking for partners -- now have a way to do so, thanks to a town committee designed to connect those looking to help.

The committee, led by Newtown Selectman Jim Gaston, spent weeks reaching out to every foundation, fund and potential donor they could find, building the master list.

"We're being a facilitator -- helping anybody who calls and says what's out there," Gaston said at a Board of Selectmen meeting earlier this month.

"There's some very good people who did some very good things," said Gaston. "Some of them are college students. Some are high school students ... They can take a look at this website and see what the matches are. That may help some of these people who did wonderful things."

Since the shooting, millions of dollars have poured into funds for a variety of purposes. The Sandy Hook School Support Fund -- organized through the United Way of Western Connecticut and Newtown Savings Bank -- is the largest such fund, with more than $8 million, but has not begun distributing funds. Earlier this week, the My Sandy Hook Family Fund announced the release of $40,000 checks to families of victims.

Town officials are not endorsing any specific fund, said Gaston -- the list is just a way to connect the many well-wishers looking to continue helping Newtown in the days, weeks and months ahead.
