Port Jeff-Bridgeport Ferry Docked

Service won't resume before Monday.

Connecticut residents looking for an end-of-summer day trip aboard the Port Jefferson and Bridgeport Ferry should call ahead.

The ferry service, which shuttles travelers from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, N.Y., is down, and won't leave dock before tomorrow.

No one answered the phone at the ferry's home office, though the terminal's website said services were either "overloaded or under maintenance."

Of course, it was Hurricane Irene that kept the boats at bay.

Before Irene hit, a ferry representative told Patch that the ferry company would resume service on Monday.

But on Sunday, the ferry's loading ramp on the Long Island side was under water, and Irene's storm surge swamped much of Port Jefferson Village.
