Update, 2:17 p.m.
There were reportedly five dogs in crates inside the van involved in the accident on the Merritt Parkway. They are being taken to Fairfield Animal Control's shelter -- no word yet on whether any dogs were hurt.

An accident on the Merritt Parkway soutbound before exit 44 -- just near the Westport line -- has been reported.
According to scanner reports, a van is overturned on its side in the left lane. The driver is out of the vehicle but there may be a dog inside.
