Robert Crook, Head of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, Defends Ammo, Assault Weapons

Crook in recent days has said the media has overused the term “assault weapon” and that efforts to limit high capacity gun magazines is “asinine.”

While calls for greater gun control in the wake of the Newtown shootings continue, Robert Crook, who heads the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, is emerging as a central figure in the statewide debate.

Crook in the past week has decried a proposal to tax certain kinds of ammunition, calling the idea “asinine.” He also has said the term “assault weapon” is partly a “media invention,” and has expressed confidence that a proposal to ban or limit high capacity gun magazines, which can hold dozens of rounds of ammunition in a single clip, will fail once the state’s attention on Newtown begins to quiet.

"We killed it once," the Hartford Courant quotes Crook saying about such a ban, "and I would suspect, once things quiet down a little bit, we'll probably do it again."

When state Sen. Beth Bye, D-West Hartford, who knows the parents of one of the 20 children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, proposed the idea of a tax on high capacity rounds Crook publicly took the suggestion to task.

"We should be looking for solutions to the problems, not these asinine ideas," the Connecticut Mirror quotes Crook about Bye’s idea. "I don't think ammunition is a health hazard. We use it in hunting. We use it in target shooting. I don't know how you can call it a health hazard, unless it's used in something like this Newtown shooting."

Homeowners should have access to semi-automatic weapons, Crook said in this New Haven Register report, to safeguard against home invasions that involve more than one assailant.

“You want to have as much ammunition as possible,” Crook said.

The weapon the Newtown shooter used was NOT an assault weapon. Assault weapons, unless grandfathered in, are ILLEGAL in CT already. It's a Class D felony to possess a post-ban assault weapon. The weapon he used is not considered an assault weapon by the state of CT, one of the strictest gun states in the Union.

We don't care what it was considered. Let's reclassify it and ban it, along with similar weapons.

So then what are you going to do? Ban all .223? Ban every semi-auto? Where does it end? Should we ban the Ruger 10/22 because that's a semi-auto but in .22. Millions of those have been sold without too many issues. How are we going to redefine "assault weapon"?

Agreed. But libs don't listen to reason or facts. They run on emotion.

I appreciate the effort Truthseeker. They dont get it now and they never will. The right to own firearms gives the people a check on the government. That is what the founders of our great nation fought and died for. Freedom from a tyrannical government. These libs piss all over the constitution and the rights they are so lucky to enjoy. George Washington must be turning in his grave, as the libs fight to give more and more power to the federal government. I feel sad for my children and their children who will grow up in a socialist state.
Frederick Klein December 21, 2012 at 06:58 PM
Yes, Truthseeker. Let's ban them all. Where does it stop? When this country stops being a gun culture.
Frederick Klein December 21, 2012 at 06:59 PM
If George Washington is turning in his grave, it is more over the deaths of 20 children than the idea that weapons he never could have been envisioned may be kept out of your hands. If gun control makes us a "socialist" nation in your mind, I can live with that.

Excuse me but I'm a liberal that happens to support gun rights. Try not to paint everyone left of center with such a wide brush.
Frederick Klein December 21, 2012 at 07:41 PM
Truthseeker - Many on the right fail to undertand that liberals are a very diverse group who often don't agree with each other on particular issues. To them, we are just "libs", "lefties", "socialists", or other terms too offensive to be repeated.

Saying anything other than the NRA really stepped on themselves today. A better sayiing might have been "let's ALL work together" to study and SOLVE the problem !!!!

George Washington had nothing to do with writing the 2nd, or any of the amendments. It would be Madison who would be ashamed at the baby-killers that use his language as their crutch. Just sayin'.
