VIDEO: Thousands ‘March for Change’ to Connecticut’s Gun Laws

As thousands rallied in at the state Capitol in Hartford for tougher gun laws, Patch was on hand to find out what brought people to the March for Change on Thursday.

On the two-month anniversary of the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that claimed the lives of 26 people, thousands gathered on the steps of the state Capitol in Hartford Thursday to advocate for changes to Connecticut’s gun laws.

The event, known as the March for Change, was organized by CT Against Gun Violence and included remarks by politicians, musicians, faith leaders and gun violence survivors and family members of others whose lives were cut short by gun violence, including several from the Sandy Hook shootings.

People came from all over Connecticut to be heard and express their views on the controversial subject of gun control, but Patch wanted to know the answer to one simple question:

5,500- but the discussion of this in the comment section is just a way to distract from the fact the change is needed. Congratulations on your efforts to create change!!

Sandra,
I did, but I let it go. I simply don't have it in me tonight to speak to his kind.
R. Ludlowe February 15, 2013 at 02:58 am
actually, the AR-15 was used. the shotgun was left in the trunk. get your facts straight, Winny.
FAIL.
Professor Zwergel February 15, 2013 at 03:23 am
Are you really ignorant enough to believe the ar-15 was not used? I think that almost all of the right-wing nut cases even admit that it was used, and the shotgun was in the trunk? Or perhaps you are just a simple liar.
R. Ludlowe February 15, 2013 at 03:37 am
Bushmaster used in the school, Winny. I think the 'mindless sheep' comment was perhaps a precursor to your own ignorance.

Listen all these soccer moms need something to do until soccer season starts again let them drive their mini vans to Washington and wave their flags or whatever they are waving if they want to. They have no idea what they want or how to get it, we can tell that by all by their intelligent comments. They have no life so let them have their minute of glory.

That one was for you Sandra you should be leading them.

Police at the event confirmed there were 5,500 people at the rally today after this article was published. Headline, dek, and text have all been updated. Text was missed at first, but is up-to-date now.

You need to stop watching that conspiracy video that has been circulating. The long gun they took from the trunk was most definitely a semi-auto shotgun.
Look at the round that is ejected from the shotgun. That's a shotgun shell, not a .223. A 12 gauge shotgun shell is usually between 2.5 and 3.5 inches long and has a diameter of almost 3/4ths (.729) of an inch. A .223 has an overall length of 2.26 and a base diameter of .378. You cannot confuse the two. That's the shotgun in the trunk.

wow Sandra your surely not the sharpest tool in the shed

The news also reported that the shooter was Ryan Lanza. In their rush for the scoop, some news organizations made mistakes.

I was there on February 14 and it was an awesome event. Only the beginning. We have the momentum to move this forward to guarantee that all people will have the right for LIFE, LIberty and the Pursuit of Happinees. NO more broken hearts!! We need to register all guns and have background checks. We need reform NOW!!
With Love and Warmth, Mom and substitute teacher, Lynn

Lynn sweetie....The awesome rally is over. Enough with the silly slogans and exclamation points. When you calm down, please explain to me how more gun laws will guarantee my right to Life Liberty and The Pursuit Of Happiness. Because you obviously know what is best for everyone.
Winston Bernard IV February 16, 2013 at 01:37 am
Truthseeker...The video IS NBC's correction of their original report.
Truthseeker57 February 16, 2013 at 02:28 am
It was still made before all of the facts were in. It was the glock, sig and bushmaster used. Saiga type shotgun was left in the car.
Sandra February 16, 2013 at 03:08 am
Winston I would not trust any "news" coming out of NBC. They edit videos in order to fit their agendas. For example NBC edited the 911 call in Trayvon Martins death. NBC tried to paint the Tea Party as racist by editing footage blocking the fact that it was a black man holding a sidearm not a white male. MSNBC edited footage of Newtown hearings to portray gun owners as heckling the father of a murdered child.

Has the State Police released the full report? I think not.
Please tell me Is the goal to stop violence or is it how do we disarm the population? Seems to me the focus is on trashing the 2nd Amendment, not preventing violence. Strange the NRA spokesman said “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.” He was vilified and insulted by the anti gun media and most notably Sen. Murphy. Yet the procedures being put in place in many school districts are: lock down and wait for a good guy with a gun. All good people will obey the law even if that means harsh and restrictive gun laws. But please tell me how many criminals will register a fire arm or worry about getting a permit? NONE!

Atticus, Ralph Arnone is next scheduled to appear in court on July 1st, at which point he isRead More expected to enter a plea. As an aside, one isn't supposed to go to bed and wake up still angry at the same thing, day in, day out, week in, week out, month in, month out... I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I care deeply about firefighters and I'm genuinely concerned about you. You were exposed to a lot of chemicals in your career. You may have some endocrine system damage or something causing an electrolyte disorder. This stuff starts out with things like joint pain and minor psychological implications but, it gets much, much worse. Get to the doc. Maybe you're just a spicy guy, maybe Ralph hurt you in some terrible way, or maybe you are sick and as a result, you'll be facing a much shortened a painful life. Honestly, I'm not trying to give you a hard time or pick a fight.
Atticus Fich June 19, 2013 at 06:01 am
Well thanks for your concern Creeky. But at my age I cant say I have lived a shorten life. As forRead More chemicals...well as most of the posters here on this rag say, firemen do nothing 99.9% of the day so I guess the on chemical exposure would be to the big comfy leather chairs in the dayroom. Why do you care anyway Creeky? In your previous posts about me you said, don't feed to trolls. You are not honest Creeky. Take your fake concern and false "honesty" and waste it on someone else. Not trying to give you a hard time, those are your comments about me. Where did you get the info on Ralphy?
Creeky June 19, 2013 at 08:05 am
Atticus, review your own posts. It isn't trolling. It's a vendetta. If you think I'm dishonest,Read More fine. I'm not going to try to speak rationally with someone whom is irrational. Why do I care? Because I've seen how much care fireman are capable of, and how much they give of themselves. It's respect and karma. As far as where I got the info, it's publicly available. If you wanted my help in how to find it yourself, perhaps you shouldn't have attacked my character. You are on your own now.
