What's Open, Closed on Labor Day

Labor Day: What's open and closed in Fairfield on Monday, September 3, 2012.

Labor Day is held on the first Monday in September each year.

Unofficially the last day of summer, the holiday, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, "constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."

Here's the list of what is open and closed in most states on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3:

Open:

  • Retail Stores
  • Supermarkets
  • Restaurants
  • Convenience stores
  • Bars/Taverns
  • Gyms/Health Clubs
  • locations (normal business hours)
  • Call ahead before heading to any of the above establishments to confirm they are open. Many retail stores or gyms/health clubs may be operating on a Sunday schedule or with limited hours.

Closed:

  • Banks (except, of course, )
  • No Mail Delivery - All U.S post offices are closed
  • Stock Market
  • Federal Offices
  • State Offices
  • Town Hall and municipal offices
  • Schools 
  • Libraries (, , ). All three libraries will also be closed on Sunday. The main branch of the Fairfield Public Library will resume Sunday hours on Sept. 16. The Pequot Library will resume Sunday hours in October.
