The tragedy of a teenager
taking his or her own life is one of the most heart breaking experiences
imaginable. There have been so many stories in the news about young lgbtq
(lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning) teenagers killing
themselves. The truth is that these kids are not the first to lose their lives
to anti-gay bullying and suicide and they won’t be the last unless and until
our society radically changes. We must be intentional and vocal about creating
communities and finding ways to give hope to youth struggling against bullying
and discrimination. And we must do so loudly and visibly so that they know they
are not alone.
The Reverend Jennifer
Campbell, Associate Pastor of First Church and Dr. Liane Nelson, Chief
Psychologist of Westchester Jewish Community Services facilitate a youth group
at The Community House in Fairfield called The Loft. The Loft meets every Friday from 4-5:30pm. We are a community for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, queer and questioning teenagers and young adults and their friends
who come together to laugh, rage, dream, and plot for a better life together
not only in the future but NOW. We are committed to the radical welcome of ALL
people and to working for justice and equality for everyone. We hope to spark
your imagination, light a fire for justice, raise some good old controversy,
and make the world a better place for everyone.
The Loft is holding the
fourth annual Lavender
Lights Vigil in remembrance of all lgbtq
teens who have lost their lives to anti-gay bullying and suicide. We hope you
will join us on Friday,
May 30th at 7:30pm on the
front lawn of First
Church Congregational at 148 Beach Road.
Members of the Loft will welcome all and speak about their own experiences.
