Join SIG Beyond for a Saturday Program at Fairfield University. A unique program for gifted and academically talented students currently in grades 1 through 6!

The SIG Beyond Saturday Program is an exciting 4 week program for academically talented and gifted students in grades 1 - 6. Students are placed in a course for their current grade level. Students engage in stimulating activities and projects designed to develop and enhance such skills as communication, leadership, problem solving, and inventive thinking. Working both independently and in groups, students will enhance social skills while engaging their academic abilities within the course curriculum.

Program Overview

The primary instructional strategy of the Saturday program is problem based learning. Using this method, students are presented with an open problem scenario which requires them to define the problem, research information needed to address the problem, and create a solution that is authentic, insightful and original. Each class is intended to challenge, while nurturing and expanding student’s individual skill sets. Students are encouraged to work within their own specialty areas, resulting in a learning experience that is personalized and truly unique for each student. In the final portion of the SIG Beyond Saturday Program, students incorporate the skills and knowledge they have learned by building solutions to the projects introduced in each course and presenting them to an audience.

SIG Eligibility Requirements

The SIG Beyond Saturday Program is open to students currently in grades 1-6 who have evidence of high academic ability and/or achievement. Students who meet one of the following criteria are invited to apply:

  • Academically talented students currently in grades 1-6 who have scored in the 95th percentile or above in at least one of the major content areas or ability sections of a nationally-normed standardized test administered by their schools (IOWA, CAT, MAT, CTBS, SRA, TERRA NOVA, etc.).

  • Students who have been identified as gifted and/or who have participated successfully in a local or school gifted program.

  • If no local or school gifted program exists, or if no test scores are available, two Recommendation Forms can be submitted. Students should submit one form from a teacher and one form from a school administrator who is familiar with the student’s record and performance. For children in grades 1-3, one form may be from a parent.

SIG Recommendation Forms are available online at www.giftedstudy.org
