FITWEEK Community Leaders Reach their 10K Goal

Hundreds of people join the first annual FITWEEK 10K Step Challenge presented by Fitbit

All five of the community leaders that took part in the first FITWEEK 10K Step Challenge presented by Fitbit reached their goal of taking 10,000 steps a day Monday through Friday of FITWEEK.  Collectively they took over 288,500 steps.  Since all of the leaders reached and even surpassed their goal, FITWEEK will make a $5,000 donation to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven.

In addition, over 220 people in the Greater New Haven community joined the 10K Step Challenge presented by Fitbit and aimed to achieve the 10,000 step goal during FITWEEK.

The 10K Step Challenge community leaders included Sonia Baghdady, News Anchor at WTNH, Dr. Anees Chagpar, Director, The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, Claire Criscuolo, Chef/Restaurateur/Cookbook Author at Claire's Corner Copia and Basta Trattoria, Tony Rescigno, President of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, James P. Torgerson, President & CEO of UIL Holdings Corporation.

Community leaders led walks during the week, which included a Pink & Green Walk in Branford starting at soundRunner and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, a shopping walk and a museum walk in downtown New Haven. The walking routes are available at http://fitweek.net/?page_id=265.

10,000 steps is a rough equivalent to the U.S. Surgeon General’s recommendation to accumulate 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. It should be enough to reduce your risk for disease and help you lead a longer, healthier life!
