The F word

Is Fashion a dirty word?

Fashion. A dirty word to some. It's not a word I really embrace. I think of myself as a clothing designer, not a fashion designer. The racks in my Post Road store here in Fairfield are not filled with fashion, but fashionable clothing. Fashion is temporary, and in my brain, perhaps a little shallow. I hate to think of the things I spend hours and hours on as temporary. Some people think fashion is just a way retailers are trying to get into your closets. And your wallets. But fashion as a business is actually a reflection of the times, of fantasy meets reality, and of coming up with something new you didn't know you wanted, or needed, but now, must have.

If nothing was new, the days would sort of drag on then, wouldn't they? Same old same old. By changing a silhouette, a hemline, a jolt of color, a certain lightness, or depth, we shake up our everyday, and our reality takes a little fantastic flight. You see it all around you, reflected in how we all couldn't wait to get our Spring clothes on after the never ending Sprinter, that Godforsaken Winter/Spring purgatory we've been living in for months. Although it appears we're not exactly free yet.

And come fall, as the leaves turn and it gets colder, we'll want to hunker down in warm wools and wonder when it will start snowing. Like the animals, we are. Peacocks, chameleons, leopards who can change their spots. My idea with this blog is to relate how fashion fresh off the runway relates to fashion walking down the Post Road. I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but I hope you'll join me in finding out.
