Marion Rowena (Shattuck) Tetreau of Fairfield, the beloved wife of 64 years of Fern Tetreau, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 with her family by her side. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three loving sons, Mike of Fairfield, Bill and his wife, Cheryl of Zionsville, PA, Jack of Fairfield; and three grandchildren, Marielle of Philadelphia, Taylor of Fairfield and Paul of Zionsville.

Rowena was born Jan. 1, 1925 in Buffalo, N.Y. Soon after, she moved to Greenfield, Mass. She talked often of going to school in a four-room school house. She then moved to Springfield, Mass and spent most of her younger life there. She was very smart and was able to attend a technical high school. She met her future husband, Fern Tetreau, at a YMCA dance.

After marriage, they moved to Staten Island/New York City so Fern could obtain his master’s degree at Columbia University. They left NYC for Brewer, Maine where Fern coached football and Mike was born. Later, they moved to Fairfield where they raised their three sons. She had to cheer for both high schools – Roger Ludlowe, for her sons and Andrew Warde, for Fern. She helped start Fairfield’s centralized substitute teacher scheduling program for all the schools and worked there for several years.

Rowena managed to juggle three sons and one husband, all playing on different football teams each fall! She never missed one of her sons’ football games.  She enjoyed and valued her extended family that included Billy Klein and Roberto “Chico” Rodriguez.

Rowena was very active in Holy Family Church and the Gaelic-American Club, both in Fairfield. She also worked hard to make Fern’s Singing Oaks Day Camp in Weston successful – where hundreds of children spent part of their summer horseback riding, swimming, archery, tennis, baseball, nature hikes, arts and crafts and learning to play well together.

Rowena enjoyed her travels with her husband to Hawaii, St. Croix, river rafting in Canada, tracing the French family roots in New Brunswick, Canada, taking a steamboat ride down the Mississippi River and San Diego to visit Mike.

She was very proud to be Irish and part of Fairfield.  She was a longtime member of the Gaelic American Club where she was an active volunteer for the Senior Luncheon as well as the Annual Irish Festival.

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10 a.m. directly at Holy Family Church in Fairfield.  Interment will be private.  Friends may greet her family on Friday, June 7, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to be made to: The Kennedy Center, Attn: Development Dept., 2440 Reservoir Ave., Trumbull, CT 06611 or via www.thekennedycenterinc.org. To send an online condolence, please visit www.shaughnesseybanks.com.
