Obituary: Maureen Gerrity, 47, of Fairfield

Ms. Gerrity and her daughter Katie died March 10 in a fire in their home.

Maureen Gerrity, 47, of Fairfield, passed away tragically on March 10, 2014, along with her loving daughter, Katie.

Born in New Jersey on May 22, 1966, Gerrity was a Fairfield resident for the last 14 years.

She received her bachelor's degree at Franklin Pierce College and had been the head of the Aids Education Department at the Norwalk Health Department.

She was a true advocate for her daughter and other children with special needs. Her primary goal was caring for her beloved daughter Katie, who was the joy of her life.

Survivors include her father, William C. Gerrity of Trumbull; her sister, Kitty Robertson and husband Dan, their children Sean, Kealy, and Liam of Fairfield; brother Bill Gerrity of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a special cousin, friend and caregiver Jack Conrad of Stamford; her aunt, Mary Noreen Igoe and husband Dan; and cousins Danielle and Christopher Igoe.

She was predeceased by her mother, Catherine Gerrity.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 14, at Holy Family Church, Fairfield. Interment will be private. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of Gerrity be made to the Upper Northeast Angelman Syndrome Foundation (www.upneangels.com) or the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (www.cureangelman.org).
