Now that the math controversy has been resolved, I'd like to invite FPS to tackle the lack of a spelling curriculum (or as my 7th grade daughter would spell: circickulum).
I've been told by numerous educators and administrators that given spell check, it really isn't necessary or a good use of educational time to work on spelling - they have said the same thing about math facts and calculators.
While we may have these wonderful technologies available, they do little to provide the building blocks of learning. Just like a poor grasp of math facts can lead to a shaky foundation in math, poor spelling skills can lead to writing and reading problems.
It is time to move forward and investigate a spelling curriculum. Heck even "pilot" it across an entire grade as just about anything would be an improvement over what we have now: NOTHING.
