26 Westport Firefighters Respond to House Fire

Westport Firefighters responded to a house that was reportedly filling with smoke at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Assistant Chief Michael Kronick.

Westport Firefighters arrived to the residence at 16 Catamount Road to find smoke coming from the house, but all of the occupants were already outside of the home, Assistant Chief Michael Kronick said.

“It was quickly determined that there was fire burning in the basement.  Firefighters stretched two hose lines into the basement to extinguish the fire and used fans to remove the smoke from the building,” he said, adding that no injuries occurred.

The fire was confined to a basement utility room, but there was smoke damage throughout the home, he said.

The Westport Fire Department responded with five engines, one ladder truck and one rescue truck with a total of 26 Firefighters.  The Fairfield Fire Department provided a fire engine to cover Westport during the fire.

“The fire’s exact cause is still under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office, but at this time the fire appears to be accidental in nature,” Kronick said.

The last Westport Fire Department unit left the scene at about 9:15 a.m.

“With all the snow from last weekend’s blizzard the Westport Fire Department would like to remind everyone to help by shoveling out their nearby fire hydrant,” Kronick said “With over 1,200 fire hydrants in the town of Westport it is difficult for firefighters to get to every one of them and shovel them clear of snow.”

“The Westport Fire Department would also like to remind everyone to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their homes.  Testing them only takes a minute to ensure they are working properly. This simple act could save your life,” Kronick said.
