Arrest Made in Violin Theft

Observant maintenance man helps nab suspect

Bridgeport man strung up in violin theft

A Bridgeport man was arrested in the Aug. 3 theft of a violin from Unquowa School. He was discovered in a science room at the school late Friday morning in the act of stealing a calculator.

According to police, around 10:30am Friday, a maintenance man at Unquowa School came upon Jeffrey Amante, 51, in a second floor classroom. Amante couldn’t give a satisfactory reason for being onsite and had a calculator valued at $200 in his possession. He matched the description of the suspect in the Aug. 3 larceny from the school of a violin valued at more than $2,000. The maintenance man detained Amante and contacted police, who arrived on the scene and arrested Amante on charges of second-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal trespass. Amante was transported to police headquarters and a court date of Aug. 15 was scheduled.

Contractor flees with downpayment

A Cambridge Street homeowner reported Friday morning that a landscaper accepted a large downpayment on a job and has not been heard from since.

According to police, Winslow Landscaping, of Shelton, was paid a $3,262 downpayment by the homeowner at 98 Cambridge Street. The contractor poured four footings on July 11 and has not been returned to the jobsite since. Apparently, the business owners, brothers, had gone on vacation. While the homeowner hoped to settle things with the landscaping service, police continued to investigate.

Spat between parents and their son leads to son’s arrest

A Fairfield man was arrested late Friday afternoon on a breach of peace charge after a verbal battle with his parents in their 206 Quincy Street home.

According to police, David Guarnieri, 52, was supposed to have been staying in Torrington, but wanted to stay with his parents at their Quincy Street home instead. The parents were not happy about this and a loud discussion between the parties ensued. In the process, Guarnieri dumped a bowl of dog food on his mother, threatened her and then fought with – and tried to punch -- officers when they arrived on the scene. Police called for an ambulance, which transported Guarnieri to a local hospital. Ultimately, he was released on a promise to appear in court on Aug. 8.

Mailbox smashed

The homeowner at 335 Valley Road reported late Friday afternoon that his mailbox had been smashed overnight.

According to police, the homeowner found the mailbox, located at the end of his driveway, in pieces scattered across his front lawn, with mail still inside the box. The mailbox is valued at $200. There was no indication of how it was damaged.

Bras unhooked from Victoria’s Secret

A sales associate at Victoria’s Secret, 1499 Post Road, reported early Saturday morning the theft of 40 assorted bras worth approximately $700.

According to police, the associate said that sometime between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday afternoon, the bras, which were all different sizes and colors, were taken. The incident is under investigation.

Pond pump swiped

The homeowner at 139 Main Street reported mid-morning Saturday the theft of a pond pump from his backyard.

According to police, some time between 1 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Friday afternoon the pump was taken. The pump is valued at $200. There are no suspects and there were no witnesses to the crime.
