As Temps Rise, So Does Number of Car Crashes in Fairfield

The sun wasn't the only thing in abundance in Fairfield this weekend -- police and fire personnel responded to quite a few motor vehicle accidents.

There were eight crashes that required a fire department response, Assistant Fire Chief Chris Tracy said.

"It's that time of year. Everyone is out and about and apparently not paying attention," Tracy said.

He advised that drivers remember to pay strict attention to the road, and to not get distracted by sunny days and warm temperatures.

There weren't any major injuries resulting from reported accidents, though most sent vehicles occupants to the hospital with minor complaints, according to police reports.

On Friday, a three-car accident on North Benson Road sent one to the hospital complaining of back pain. One car struck the rear of another, which caused the latter to hit the rear of a third car.

Three vehicles collided on Black Rock Turnpike in front of Eastern Mountain Sports on Friday. Two were sent to the hospital -- one complaining of chest pains due to airbag deployment, the other requested transport to St. Vincent's for agitation.

One vehicle struck a utility pole on in front of Athena Diner in Southport on Saturday. Both occupants were able to get out of the vehicle, and both were sent to the hospital. One complained of hip and head pain, and the other occupant suffered head pain. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
