[UPDATED] Body Found on Chambers Street in Fairfield

Local police have called upon the state police major crimes unit for help investigating the suspicious death.

Update, 11:25 a.m.

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a middle-aged white male, whose body was discovered this morning in the parking lot of a business on Chambers Street.

There was a single gunshot wound to the right temple of the man's head, department spokesperson Lt. James Perez said. The man has yet to be identified, but police confirmed he is not a Fairfield resident.

The death was called in to police at 7:15 this morning by a business owner on Chambers Street, who discovered a black SUV with out-of-state plates parked in the lot of .

The driver's side door was open and the body was located on the pavement on the driver's side, Perez said.

A small handgun was found in the proximity of the body, according to Perez. He said the number of rounds was unknown at the time of this morning's press briefing.

The State Police major crime squad is aiding the department in processing the scene, Perez said.

"We are not discounting anything. This is a full-fledged investigation," Perez said. He added it was too soon to tell whether this was a homicide or a suicide.

So far, police have not located any witnesses to aid in the investigation. Anyone with information that could help police should call the Detective Bureau at 203-254-4840.

Chambers Street is currently closed between Commerce Drive and Johnson Street. Perez expects it will remain closed for most of the day as police process the scene.
