Car Fire Briefly Shuts Down Route 7 Connector in Norwalk

No one was hurt in the car fire, which briefly shut down the northbound side of the Route 7 connector near Exit 3 in Norwalk Sunday morning.

The responded to a car fire shortly after 9:30 a.m., Sunday on the Route 7 connector near Exit 3 in .

According to fire department officials, the 2005 Nissan Maxima was traveling north when the driver heard a strange noise from the engine and a passerby motioned for her to pull over. The driver saw smoke coming from the engine compartment, then flames from under the car, officials said. Another vehicle pulled over and the driver attempted to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

When firefighters arrived on scene they quickly extinguished the fire. The northbound side of the connector was closed for about ten minutes while firefighters put out the fire.

Connecticut State Police and Norwalk Police were reportedly on scene to provide assistance. The vehicle was towed off of the highway by 10:20 a.m., Norwalk fire officials said.

Meanwhile state police are investigating a in on Saturday morning that apparently claimed the lives of two people.

Officials said initially the and jointly responded to a report of a grass fire on the side of the Merritt Parkway, but on arrival firefighters discovered there was a vehicle on fire.

After extinguishing the blaze firefighters discovered there were two bodies inside the vehicle. It is unclear why the two people did not get out of the car — nor did the report state whether the vehicle may have been involved in an accident.

The Merritt Parkway was reportedly shut down for several hours between Exits 42 and 44 northbound while state police conducted an investigation.
