Cops: Man Attempted to Steal TV by Hiding It Under Sweatshirt

A Bridgeport man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly attempted to shoplift a flat screen television from BJ's on Black Rock Turnpike, police said.

A store employee reported to police that the suspect tried to hide the TV under his sweatshirt and leave the store without paying. The TV is valued at $160.

The suspect was identified as Israel Reyes, 26, of Palisade Avenue. He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

A second man believed to be Reyes' accomplice in the crime was charged with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. Police said Nelson Aponte, 54, of Willow Street in Waterbury was acting as Reyes' getaway driver.

Aponte was further charged with interfering with police officers for allegedly giving police a false name. He was released after posting a $25 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.
